Just like that 2018 is here and osteopathic students are having to prepare for COMLEX Level 1. While many tests have been taken to get to this point, COMLEX Level 1 is the first step (of several) to becoming a doctor of osteopathic medicine and there is a lot riding on this exam.

With the stakes high, it’s easy to become overwhelmed and be uncertain of where to begin preparing for the behemoth that is COMLEX Level 1. Fortunately, we’ve comprised this list of three things you should be doing to prepare for your exam right now.

Follow these steps to set yourself up for success to take and pass COMLEX Level 1 this year.

1. Register with NBOME and Schedule Your COMLEX Exam

nbome-logoOnce deemed eligible by your COM to take COMLEX Level 1, you have to set up your account with the National Board of Osteopathic Medical Examiners (NBOME). Once your account is created, you’ll be able to register, pay for and schedule all of your future COMLEX-USA exams.

Your NBOME account will be your gateway to all things COMLEX. Should you have to change your exam date or update any of your personal information, you’ll do that within your NBOME account. This is also where your scores will be posted about four to six weeks after the date of your exam.

2. Learn About the Exam Format and Review the Blueprint

Once you’ve completed your registration, it’s time to become familiar with the COMLEX Level 1 exam format. The NBOME provides great resources to help you become familiar with the exam format and the testing process such as the 2018 Master Blueprint and the 2018 COMLEX-USA Bulletin of Information.

When it comes to test day, we recommend watching this video from Prometric regarding what to expect:

3. Begin Studying for COMLEX Level 1 with Practice Questions

COMLEX Level 1 is comprised of 400 test questions that are divided into two four-hour testing sessions, all taking place during one day. The exam is computer-based and administered at Prometric Test Centers.

Learning is an active process involving the retrieval and reconstruction of knowledge. Practice retrieval, or the process of using cues to actively recall and reconstruct knowledge, has been proven in multiple studies to be the single most effective method of retaining knowledge. You can read more about that in our blog, The Testing Effect While Preparing for Medical Licensure Exams.

Because testing has been shown to produce better retention than re-reading or re-studying material, it makes sense that you should be studying for COMLEX Level 1 by taking practice questions in an environment simulating your upcoming exam experience.

That’s where TrueLearn comes in.
