You have been in the game for a while now and are reaching the end of your surgical residency year. Some of you may be facing the ABSITE (American Board of Surgery In-Training Exam) for the first time. For many, however, you have been around the block a few times as far as this exam goes, and likely have a pretty solid idea of what to expect. With that being said, TrueLearn was recently reviewed by the American Journal of Surgery, and we are happy to report that the statistics for our ABSITE SmartBank predict a staggering 20% increase in average score by users who completed the entire 1,000 questions.

American Journal of Surgery Concludes:

“If a resident was to complete the entire online [TrueLearn] question bank consisting of 1000 questions, the overall percentage correct and overall percentile on the ABSITE is estimated to increase by 3% and 20% respectively.” Read the study here.

ABSITE Overview

The ABSITE exam consists of 250 Multiple-Choice Questions and takers will have 5 hours to complete the exam. That means you will need to be completing about 50 questions per hour in order to complete them all, that’s a rate of 1.2 minutes per question. With that being said, make sure you are not spending an excessive amount of time on difficult questions. If you are feeling stumped, mark them for follow up and continue on with the exam. Revisit them once you have reached the end of the questions.

Why the ABSITE Is Important

Keep in mind that while you do just need a passing score, fellowships may be interested in the number. In a study conducted by the Division of General Surgery at the Mount Sinai Hospital they concluded that while more weight is given to letters of recommendation and the residency program itself, the ABSITE score was still an important factor for residents applying to surgical fellowships. Further stating, “Applicants should aim to score above the 50th percentile to be competitive for most fellowship programs.” Read the study here.
