Our History
Founded by Dr. Joshua Courtney in 2007, TrueLearn, LLC was created to provide every medical student the opportunity to Match into their desired residency program. We saw too many students limit their potential by getting low board scores after using suboptimal methods of preparation.
Known then as COMBANK and Test Weapon, we have since expanded into residency, allied health, and healthcare exam support, as well as continuing medical education (CME).

TrueLearn Leadership
In January of 2023, Kevin Sayar joined TrueLearn as the Chief Executive Officer. A 20+ year veteran of the education technology industry, Sayar is an accomplished executive, growing and scaling businesses through innovation and a focus on customer success.
Concurrent with Sayar’s appointment as CEO, TrueLearn’s founder, Joshua Courtney, DO, was named Executive Chairman of the Board.
TrueLearn SmartBanks
We call our question banks SmartBanks, because they are more than just practice questions. We combine exam-style questions, comparative analytics to benchmark against your peers, thorough explanations of right and wrong answers, mnemonic videos, active learning principles, and individualized testing features to guide learning and increase performance on high-stakes exams.

In 2020, LLR acquired TrueLearn. LLR Partners is a middle market private equity firm committed to creating long-term value by growing its portfolio companies.
TrueLearn Acquires Picmonic
In fall of 2021, TrueLearn expanded its footprint and platform capabilities through the acquisition of Picmonic. Founded by Ron and Ken Robertson, Picmonic is a leading audiovisual learning platform and has proven effective in helping learners master challenging concepts through the use of animated picture mnemonics.
TrueLearn Acquires APEX
In fall of 2022, TrueLearn acquired APEX Anesthesia Review (APEX). Founded by Kevin Baker and Daniel Frasca, who are both CRNA’s, APEX is a leading provider of high-stakes exam preparation and learning support for Student Registered Nurse Anesthetists (SRNAs) and of continuing education for Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists (CRNAs).
TrueLearn Acquires Medality
In February 2025, TrueLearn reaffirmed its commitment to healthcare education by acquiring Medality, formerly known as MRI Online. Medality is a leading provider of education and practice development solutions for radiologists, helping tens of thousands of radiologists from over 100 countries upskill in advanced imaging areas.
