Get To Know The COMLEX Level 1 Exam
Students should be prepared for a full day of testing. The exam occurs in 2 four-hour sessions. Students are also allotted up to 60 minutes of break time throughout the day.
Level 1 contains 352 multiple-choice questions broken into eight sections of 44 questions each. Students can prepare for this volume by creating practice tests within their SmartBank and incrementally increasing the number of items each day leading up to the exam.
For Level 1, the minimum passing score students must achieve is 400. As of May 2022, test-takers will not receive an actual score, rather they will see a pass/fail designation with a performance profile for each content area.
Students should prepare for a minimum of 11% of the 352 questions to cover osteopathic manipulative medicine (OMM) directly, which will increase to 12% on May 7, 2024 at the start of the 2024-2025 testing cycle. Plus, OMM is integrated through all areas of the exam, reflecting how osteopathic principles and practices permeate osteopathic medicine.
COMLEX Level 1 is typically taken towards the end of your second year of medical school. Most students start preparing for the exam shortly after the school year begins and subscribe to a question bank 6–9 months prior to test day.
