ABOG Written Exam Prep: How to Prepare for the OBGYN Qualifying Exam

Written By: The TrueLearn Team | Share:

The American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology (ABOG) written exam is the first of two exam requirements to complete before obtaining Board OBGYN certification. The multiple-choice exam covers obstetrics, gynecology, and office practice and is designed to assess each candidate’s readiness for independent clinical decision-making.

What is the ABOG Written (Qualifying) Exam?

The ABOG written exam is the first exam for OBGYN board certification. The second is an oral board examination, also known as the certifying exam.

Candidates may take the exam after completing an OBGYN residency program accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME).

In 2025, the OBGYN qualifying exam pass rate was 90.43% for first-time test-takers and 87.14% overall.

Best Ways to Prepare for the ABOG Written Exam

Use the advice below, along with tips from former OBGYN residents, to level up your ABOG written exam prep.

1. Use a Question Bank That Matches the Exam

Question banks aligned to the exam blueprint will help you prepare effectively for the actual exam. You’ll familiarize yourself with the question types, exam format, and overall difficulty of the exam. In turn, you’ll reduce test anxiety, apply your knowledge, and identify knowledge gaps.

2. Follow the ABOG Blueprint

Review the topics outlined in the ABOG exam blueprint to ensure you understand the content you’ll encounter on exam day. We provided a rough outline above, but be aware of cross-content areas, including cultural awareness and equitable care, patient communication, applied basic science, and more.

3. Practice Timed Exams to Build Stamina

The exam is lengthy, so spending too much time on one question can disrupt your pacing. Practice with timed exams to boost your memory and endurance. Keep track of your time as you go through each question.

4. Review Weak Areas Consistently

Regularly reviewing weak content areas helps improve both understanding and recall. Use flashcards and practice questions to strengthen your memory and combat forgetting information. Be sure to understand why you’ve missed certain questions by reading thorough answer explanations.

5. Use Active Learning

Active learning methods are far more effective than passive methods alone. Pairing active and passive review is key to both applying and testing your knowledge. Active review often includes using flashcards, case studies, mind maps, teaching others, and practice questions or tests.

How long should you study for the ABOG Written Exam?

Ideally, your ABOG written board study prep should begin two to three months before your exam date. Why? Because cramming isn’t the answer. Let’s face it, life happens. Studying sooner will allow wiggle room if you miss a review session in your routine, and it’s better to be safe than sorry.
