Occupational Therapy Assistant Certification: Eligibility Requirements and How to Apply for the Exam

Before you can take the Certified Occupational Therapy Assistant (COTA®) exam, you’ll need to complete the application process and meet all eligibility requirements. Having the right documentation ready can help you avoid unnecessary delays and keep your certification plans on track. Here’s what you need to know about applying for the COTA® exam, including the documents you’ll need along the way.

The Certification Pathway

The steps below provide a great overview of how to get certified as an OTA!

Step 1: Meet the NBCOT® eligibility requirements.

Step 2: Create your MyNBCOT account and begin your application.

Step 2: Submit all required information and transcripts via the MyNBCOT portal.

Step 4: Receive your Authorization to Test (ATT) and schedule your exam date.

Step 5: Take the exam at your Pearson Testing Center.

Step 6: Pass the exam to receive your digital NBCOT® certificate.

Reminder: NBCOT® certification is not the same as a state license. You must apply for state licensure after passing the COTA in order to practice.

Education and Fieldwork Prerequisites

COTA eligibility requirements include earning an occupational therapy assistant degree from an ACOTE-accredited program, completing Level I and Level II fieldwork, adhering to the NBCOT® Code of Conduct, and receiving approval after a character review.

You have a three-year window from your graduation date to take the exam. If the eligibility requirements happen to change after this three-year window, you must meet the new requirements to take the COTA.

How to Apply for the NBCOT® COTA Exam

Create your MyNBCOT account: Visit nbcot.org to create an account and apply for the examination.
Submit your transcripts: To determine your eligibility, NBCOT® requires you to submit your Degree Verification Form (DVF) within six months of your anticipated graduation date or your official final transcript from your OTA program. Final transcripts are required to grant COTA certification, so you must submit them once available if you submitted a DVF.
Application and exam fees: Pay the $540 COTA exam fee. You can also order one free Eligibility Confirmation Notice and one free Score Transfer with your exam application. After that, you must pay $35 for each.
Wait for approval: Transcripts are reviewed in the order they’re received. It can take up to 10 business days or longer during busier seasons.

Common Reasons Applications Get Delayed

Applications can be delayed for several reasons, but most often it’s because your paperwork isn’t correct. The NBCOT® will email you if it can’t process your application because of missing information.

Double-check that your transcripts are official with the registrar’s official seal, stamp, or signature and list all courses and fieldwork completed for your OTA degree. If transcripts don’t match your full name, Social Security number, or student ID, it can cause delays.

Furthermore, if you fail to pass the background check or disclose any information in your character review, it may affect your eligibility to test.

Finally, beware of applying too early. You must meet all education requirements before applying, and NBCOT® only holds official transcripts for 30 days if you haven’t created an official account with them.

What Happens Once You’re Approved

You’ve been approved! Congratulations. Just a few steps remain before certification.

Get your ATT: You will receive an email three days after approval that contains your ATT letter. It is only active for 90 days—this is your testing window.
Schedule your testing appointment with Pearson: If you plan to receive your score on a specific score release date, you must schedule your exam at least 3 days in advance of that date. Your exam date must be within the date parameters outlined in your ATT.
