Understanding the Average USMLE Step 2 CK Score – What Students Should Know for 2026

Understanding the Average USMLE Step 2 CK Score – What Students Should Know for 2026

Quick summary:
In this article, you’ll learn why the USMLE Step 2 CK score is becoming more important than ever and what the new scoring changes mean for students. The article explains recent trends in national averages, how the passing score is increasing, and what students should focus on when preparing for the 2026 exam cycle.

Key Takeaways:
1. The Step 2 CK passing score increased from 214 to 218 in July 2025
2. Most first-time U.S. and Canadian test-takers score around 248 to 250 on average
3. Step 2 CK now carries greater weight in resideny applications since Step 1 became pass/fail

Since the United States Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE) Step 1 changed to pass/fail scoring in 2022, medical students have shifted their focus to ensuring their Step 2 CK score exceeds expectations. Now, average scores for Step 2 CK are on the rise, making the exam seem more challenging than before—but that’s not the case.

If you need clarification on what Step 2 score you need to match into your dream residency program, we’re here to help. We’ll demystify everything you need to know for Step 2 CK scoring and help you understand what score to aim for.

Understanding the Step 2 CK Scoring Landscape

Average Step 2 CK scores are getting higher and higher, but don’t be fooled! Averages haven’t skyrocketed overnight. Instead, averages have increased over the years due to better preparedness, passing standards, changes to the USMLE Step 1 scoring, and more. Let’s dive into how the exam itself is scored.

How Step 2 CK is Scored

Reported Step 2 CK scores range from 1–300. Examinees receive a three-digit score within this range on their score report, and their performance is equated rather than curved.

In June 2025, the USMLE Management Committee reviewed the passing standard and raised it from 214 to 218, effective for Step 2 CK exams taken on or after July 1, 2025.

The Current Average Step 2 CK Score

Over the past three years, according to USMLE data, the average score for first-time takers from accredited US/Canadian medical schools has gradually increased from 248 to 250, well above the passing standard.

The American Medical Association (AMA) reports that DOs who matched, regardless of specialty, scored an average of 248. For MDs, the average was 250.

Although many students may find this increase daunting, rest assured that the average hasn’t changed drastically—it’s simply moving up over time.

Why Step 2 Averages are Trending Up

The Step 1 Pass/Fail Effect

Since Step 1 transitioned to pass/fail score reporting in 2022, residency programs have begun giving more weight to applicants’ Step 2 CK scores when selecting who to interview and accept.

Since then, students have been investing more time and effort into studies and preparation for the Step 2 CK, which has clearly paid off! Proper preparation for the exam has led to small yet measurable score increases, which is the likely reason the average has grown over the years.

Focused Prep and Better Resources

There are also more Step 2 CK resources than ever before. Students are choosing smarter, better tools to prep for their exams. Question banks with predictive analytics and data-driven results help drive students toward success. It’s the future of studying!

The Competitive Residency Factor

In competitive specialties like dermatology, orthopedic surgery, and anesthesiology, a high Step 2 score can make all the difference. That’s why applicants often push higher averages, preparing themselves to stand out from the crowd and match into the program of their dreams.

What the 2025 Step 2 CK Averages Mean for Students

Setting Realistic Score Goals

When setting your goals, you must not only focus on meeting the Step 2 CK passing score, but also on achieving at least an average score. In 2024, according to the AMA, there was only a 13-point difference between the highest and lowest average score across all specialties for MDs. For DOs, there was a 12-point difference.

And, if you hope to match into a competitive specialty, you may have to shoot a little higher than average. Still, a high score isn’t everything. Other factors are considered, such as clinical grades, research or leadership experience, and letters of recommendation. If your score isn’t higher, don’t be discouraged. Just make sure your application includes something that sets you apart.

How to Benchmark Your Progress

A reliable way to track your progress and make sure you’re ready for the exam is a question bank with built-in analytics. Practice questions and exams allow you to gauge your knowledge and readiness.

Use these questions to test yourself consistently rather than all that once—this method will ensure you’re familiarizing yourself with the exam material. Plus, it’s a great way to stay motivated as you prepare for the exam and watch your performance improve.

Interpreting Pass Rates and Score Changes

Although the passing standard has increased, the majority of students still pass on their first attempt. The exam isn’t more challenging. Instead, students are better prepared for the exam and are exceeding expectations. And with the proper prep, you can meet your score goals, too.
