Why Your CREOG Score Matters
The Council on Resident Education in Obstetrics and Gynecology Examination, or the CREOG In-Training, is a yearly examination in Obstetrics & Gynecology residency that tests your knowledge foundation.
While it mainly is an assessment to determine what you know, there are many other reasons why you should implement a solid study strategy to outperform yearly on your CREOG Exam. Here are some of the reasons why a solid score matters.
What is a Good CREOG Score?
OB/GYN residents who score lower than 190 present an increased risk of failing the board exam. In keeping a score of 200 or above, residents have assurance of passing their boards, as studies show there is a 35% – 40% chance of failing if not.
Predicts Performance on ABOG Qualifying Exam
As mentioned before, the CREOG In-Training Examination is a good indicator of whether or not you are ‘at-risk’ for failing to pass your written boards. Scores on the CREOG are converted to percentiles to compare where each resident and training program stands amongst their peers, to assess progress of learning, and to identify areas that need improvement for at-risk residents.
Provides Leverage When Applying to Competitive Fellowships
If you are considering applying to a competitive fellowship, leveraging higher CREOG exam scores can have an advantage on the interviews you receive and your chances of matching. In a study on training in reproductive endocrinology, those who received an interview appeared to have higher CREOG test scores. While not all fellowships weigh this as a higher advantage, preparing to outperform on your yearly exam can show to have significant benefits if you are looking to stand out in a competitive specialty.
How to Obtain a Good CREOG Score
Every year, Obstetrics and Gynecology residents will need to answer 4-6% more questions right, or 12-19 new facts, than the previous year to keep a consistent three digit yearly score.
Knowing the importance of this exam, founder of the A to Z Medical Excellence Scholarship, Dr. Arthurine Zakama, a Maternal-Fetal Medicine Fellow, became determined to switch up her study methods in her third year to help increase her CREOG performance. After adjusting her routine and implementing TrueLearn’s CREOG Question Bank, she was able to see a score increase of 30 points on her next exam.
Research even shows that TrueLearn’s CREOG high-yield questions mapped to the CREOG blueprint provides residents with predictive insights and guides them on areas needing improvement to maximize exam performance. With individual performance analytics and national comparison amongst peers, residents have the insights needed to predict future performance and gain a clear focus on weak areas needing the most improvement.
