Survey Reveals Praxis®-Related Trends and Challenges in SLP Education

Educators are concerned about declining Praxis® exam first-time pass rates and the lack of access to objective student performance data.

Downward trending first-time pass rates on the Praxis® exam over the last few years is giving speech-language pathology (SLP) educators cause for concern, especially given the rising demand for certified speech-language pathologists in the country. Educators face multiple hurdles in ensuring students are adequately exam-ready and can outperform on the Praxis® exam. At the same time, the revised CAA Standard 5.2 no longer accepts the exam as a form of summative assessment so programs and faculty must find a viable alternative to demonstrate compliance.

To understand the key challenges and concerns faced by SLP educators, TrueLearn conducted a survey of faculty that included Professors, Department Chairs, and Program Directors.

Key Findings:

  • 34.8% of participants say they lack meaningful objective performance data needed to identify and provide remediation for at-risk students early
  • Ensuring students retain the information taught and gathering robust longitudinal data on exam performance to optimize outcomes and identify curricular trends were the top two challenges reported
  • 47.8% of SLP educators want a resource that has pre-created Praxis®-style content for all faculty members to use throughout the curriculum, which would support formative assessment requirements
